1. Sky News

This seems to be everyone’s favourite news app here, it’s their first iPad app where users can access bespoke and exclusive content through their tablet on the go. We like that the app is very video and sound layered and also that there are two ways of presenting the story – the timeline which goes over the last 24 hours and the top stories view where you can choose one news story which is shown in the middle along with 5 relating articles around the outside. The most amazing thing about this app though is that it’s still free!

2. Flipboard

This is Apple’s app of the year. Slightly egotistical and self-involved this app creates an interactive magazine from your social media news feeds. It basically turns your Facebook and Twitter account into something that looks like a magazine. You can do this with the tweets of people you follow too, so a much easier read all round. The beauty of this app is that you can share, favourite, like or retweet with whatever you are reading.

3. Guardian Eye Witness

A daily showcase of some of the world’s best news photography. Every day a photo is displayed in a brilliant large format with the aim that you can appreciate the photo by studying and holding your attention for more than 2 seconds. The photos vary in subject from wildlife, beautiful scenery and haunting images from around the world. Every photo is accompanied by pro-tips to give the user an idea of how the photo was taken.

4. The Times & Sunday Times (James’ fav)

This is by far the slickest newspaper app we’ve come across, the fact that it was designed for the iPad straight off really shows. You can install the app and enter your online subscription code to gain full access. The pop up menu allows you to flick around the newspaper easily. The Times is a quality newspaper with excellent content so we personally think the pay wall is justified.

5. TED

TED is a non-profit organisation dedicated to spreading ideas in Technology, Entertainment and Design. The speakers are all experts in their field and passionate about their cause. I have recently been inspired by a female Iranian artist exiled from her country for producing her art and an Austrian designer trying to find a different way to think about happiness.

6. Twitter

This app doesn’t really need an explanation. You can follow our company tweets @WhiteSpiderMed or our personal tweets

James - @jwturner86

Emma - @damica86

Imo - @ImogenRees

7. Wired Magazine

The app sold 24,000 copies in the first 24 hours. You can swipe through the issue, if held horizontally there is extra information on the current article. With the magazine costing the same as buying it on a newsstand this app is definitely value for money. The Mercedes ad, we think, is the best example of using the iPad for an ad.

8. Pepper Pig Happy Mrs Chicken (Dan’s fav)

Since Dan actually gave his iPad to his family he tells me this is his daughter Florence’s favourite app. It includes lots of games such as a maze, a chicken coop and stickers.

9. Aweditorium

This musical app puts pictures of all the content around an artist such as beautiful photography, lyrics, high definition videos and interviews which puts them all together into a fun, intimate experience on a multi-touch display.

10. Football Manager 2011

Developed by Sports Interactive, the kings of the football management genre, Football Manager Handheld 2010 brings you the unrivalled realism of the best selling and critically acclaimed Football Manager series. Manage in any of 34 leagues from 11 countries and take your chosen team to the top of the football world.
